I have served on the City of Houston Building and Standards Commission since 1994. Currently, I am the Vice Chairman of the Commission and am serving as the Chair of one of the four panels that meet monthly.
Currently, the commission is hosted by the Police Department's Neighborhood Protection Corps. There are over 5,000 dangerous or substandard structures or properties in Houston. Each of the four panels sees between 1 and 40 cases each month. Because it is a quasi-judicial body, the Commission sets forth orders and can impose fines during the process.
The Commission can be compassionate and tries to help property owners do the right thing along with directing them to helpful agencies and non-profits when need is demonstrated.
