    TREC passes emergency rules

The Texas Real Estate Commission passed emergency rules granting an additional four months to complete the license renewal or application process for licensees and existing applicants who reside or maintain offices in the 29 counties declared disaster areas due to Hurricane Ike and who have either begun the application process or have a license expiring during the period of September 30, 2008 and February 28, 2009.

The extra four month period for license renewal begins on the date the license is set to expire. The deadline extension also includes satisfying MCE and fingerprinting requirements for renewals as well as taking exams for existing applicants.

The rules apply to salespersons, brokers, and inspectors.

More information regarding TREC's response to Hurricane Ike can be found at the commission's Web site, which will be updated periodically.

We have consolidated the rule changes into single documents; one for TREC and one for the Texas Appraiser Licensing and Certification Board. Since many of the people impacted by the hurricane will likely not have Internet access or may not be reading the newspaper right now, word of mouth is going to be the best method of distributing this information to those who need it most.

Thank you for your help in getting the word out. We will also send out a notice once the guidelines for application for aid through the Texas REALTOR® Disaster Relief Fund have been established so please take note of anyone in your offices who you think might qualify.

    Where to volunteer

For volunteer opportunities in the Fort Bend County area, see www.volunteerfortbend.org

The United Way of Greater Houston is asking anyone who would like to volunteer -- as well as those who need assistance -- in the Houston-Galveston area to call 2-1-1 Texas / United Way HELPLINE. Specialists will connect potential volunteers with local agencies in need of help.

The Harris County Citizen Corps needs volunteers to man POD sites around Houston. To join the corps, fill out this form. Once you join, the Corps will send you an email if you are needed. www.harriscountycitizencorps.com

The Houston Food Bank needs volunteers to put together food packages and pass them out. They say the need for volunteers will continue for weeks. Some volunteer positions can be done by children as young as 8 years old, though they need to be accompanied by an adult at all times. The food bank is located at 3811 Eastex Fwy. Call 713-223-3700 for more information, or simply show up to work. More information about volunteering may be found here.

The American Red Cross generally accepts only trained volunteers, but it does need bilingual volunteers who will be given onsite training. Call 713-526-8300 for more information or go to www.redcross.org.

MD Anderson Cancer Center is in urgent need of blood and platelet donations for cancer patients. Call 713-792-7777 to make an appointment.

The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center says donations are especially needed now because of a four-day hiatus forced by Hurricane Ike. Click here for open donor centers.

For more opportunities, contact Volunteer Houston by email at volunteerhouston@gmail.com or call 713 853-8802.
